As part of the Neuhaus program (Dutch and English) at Nieuwe Instituut Rotterdam we did 4 participatory Far is Near walks in September 2019:
6 and 7 Sept. 14:00 – 16:30
14 Sept. 11:00 – 13:30 and 14:30 – 17:00
Master remote listening. During a walk through the city, you will be given headphones connected to microphones on extension cords. You experiment with different distances between your ears: 2 meters, 5 meters, 20 meters. Your head is thus enlarged, so to speak.
Do the sounds, which enter your ears from this greater distance, become coherent in your brain? And what is it like, through listening like this, to move around objects such as a tree, a bridge, a car, or a bus stop?
